I created this comic as my entry for a competition.  I didn’t win, so now I’m free to share it with my readers!  To make it easier for most people, I’ve translated it out of the original Latvian into English.

[Art note: I decided in this case to use vector graphics (rather than my usual rough sketches and bitmaps) — which was interesting, being simultaneously liberating (let the computer do the work) and challenging (the need to make definite decisions on line position).  Thank you inkscape.]

Itchy gets a starring role today (Knee was nowhere to be found when I wanted to sketch him.) My mother-in-law gave me this word to keep. Thanks Barbara 🙂

Oh, and here’s the small beaded rhinoceros we bought on a street corner, directly from the artist, in Johannesburg.  It seems to be settling in well to the late summer in England:

2013-03-09 The Newt Rhino

This is exciting, because it turns out that the Newt Rhino is extremely abundant, possibly the most abundant animal there is. However, they are elusive and scientists can’t even agree about their mass yet.

I’m hoping to find out even more at a University of Oxford seminar next week by Dr. Antonin Vacheret. The title is “Neutrino, the invisible messenger” – I wonder if they’ve spotted their spelling mistake.

Here’s a doodle I made to go on a poster for a forthcoming concert. We’ll be raising money for Save the Rhino International (again.) The amount of rhino poaching is still increasing — the rhinos may be doomed simply because of an erroneous belief in the healing properties of their horns.

I found out recently about the increased poaching of white rhinoceros — due to the ill-conceived belief that its horn cures cancer. While the recipients find out that they’ve paid $50,000 per kilo of horn for something that doesn’t work, the rhino dies anyway from the overly aggressive wound. So my band Skeleton Crew will be doing a rhinoceros benefit concert in July. If you know any rhinoceros lutenists, can you ask them to get in touch?
